The Rock that is Higher than I

The Rock that is Higher than I

Psalm 61:1-2

In this sermon we will be look at what we can do when our heart is overwhelmed. In the passage David said he desire in this situation was to be led to the rock that is higher than I. Here we will look at some reasons that we should have the same desire and why being led to the rock that is higher than ourselves is beneficial for us.

Why we need to be led to the rock that is higher than us?

1)  It reminds us who God really is (Psalm 78:35)

  • Exodus 17:6 (Note that this is the first time the word rock is used in the Bible and it is God standing upon a rock)
  • In 1 Corinthians 10:4 we learn that this rock is Jesus Christ.

2)  Jesus is the true high ground that we need in time of trouble (Psalm 18:2-3)

  • Note what our rock is said to be in these verses; Fortress, Deliver, Strength, Buckler, Horn of Salvation, High Tower.
  • Jesus Christ is all of those things for us (Philippians 4:19)

3)  It gives us the right perspective (Psalm 40:1-2)

  • When we are led to the rock that is higher than we are we can get the perspective we really need on the problems of this world.

4)  It is where we can see the glory of God (Psalm 78:15-16)

  • God used the rock to give the people and their livestock an abundant supply of water.
  • In Exodus 33:18-23 Moses is on the mountain and request to see God’s glory.
  • Note verse 21 God told Moses that there was a place by him, and that he would put him upon a rock.
  • Now Moses was not allowed to see the face of God but he did see his backside and the glory of God made his face to shine so that the people wanted Moses to wear a vail.
