Why We Cannot Find Help
Psalm 46:1
In the society that we live in today there are self-help books, podcast, websites, videos etc. And yet for all the information that is out there most people cannot truly find help. In this sermon we will do a simple study that may show why we cannot find the help we desperately need.
Two reasons for not finding help:
1) Looking to the wrong person (Psalm 124:8)
- Being in a society with all the self-help resources, we have become to dependent on self and not God. This verse says that our help is in the name of the Lord.
2) Looking to the wrong place (Psalm 121:1-2)
- We must be looking to the Lord first and foremost for our help.
- Note Hebrews 12:1-4. This is especially true when we are needing help with a besetting sin. Jesus Christ is should be our example.
Our greatest help comes from the word of God:
Putting the above two thoughts together should point us to the word of God, as Jesus Christ is the word of God and his name is called the word of God (John 1:1,14 ; Revelation 19:13)
Psalm 28:7 (Must trust the word of God)
Psalm 119:130 (word gives light and understanding)
John 6:67-68 (Jesus alone has the words of eternal life)
1 Thessalonians 2:13 (we must receive the words of God as words of God)
James 2:22-24 (We must be hearers and doers of the word)
The result of getting help from God is happiness (Psalm 146:5).
The question we must answer regarding ourselves:
Are we helpable? Everyone knows someone who is looking for help and yet no matter what you do for them you cannot help them. The question is does God look at us the same way? In order for us to be helped there are two requirements:
1) We must see our need for help and desire help.
2) We must be willing to follow the help we receive.
