Whom He May Devour, 1 Pet 5:8

Whom He May Devour

The devil is a devourer.  He came to steal, and to kill, and to destroy, Jn 10:10.  We’re going to follow the word devour through some passages in the Bible to see how the devil does his work.

He devours by the wicked. 2 Thes 2:8 then shall that Wicked be revealed.

  • Hab 1:13 the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he.  Like the Pharisees killed Jesus; and the kings killed prophets, Jer 2:30.  He’ll use wicked men in authority to try stop God’s men.
  • Matt 23:14 ye devour widow’s houses, and for a pretense make long prayer.  Wicked religious men prey on others for their money.
  • Matt 13:4 some seeds fell by the wayside, and the fowls came and devoured them up, Matt 13:19.  The devil will steal the word sown in a man’s heart.
  • Rev 12:4 the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.  The devil has always been and will always be out to destroy Israel.

He devours by war.

  • Jud 9:20 Abimelech and the men of Shechem devoured each other.
  • Is 1:20 ye shall be devoured with the sword.
  • Dan 7:5, 7, 19, 23 Arise, devour much flesh.

Wars won’t cease until the Lord Jesus Christ returns to this earth and stops them himself, Is 2:4.

He devours by words.

  • Ps 52:4 thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.
  • Gal 5:15 if ye bite and devour one another.

We must be exceedingly vigilant to never let our tongues be used by the devil to destroy the unity of the Spirit in our church.

Conclusion: Be sober, be vigilant and practice Eph 4:27, “neither give place to the devil”.
