People often want to know what happens after death.  The following notes are an outline, more or less in chronological order, of the things that will happen after death.  After death:

The soul departs – Gen 35:18

The spirit returns to God – Ecc 12:7

The body returns to the dust – Ecc 12:7; Gen 3:19

In the Old Testament the souls of saints went to Abraham’s bosom – Lk 16:22 – from there, after the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, these souls were removed and taken to heaven – Acts 2:31; Eph 4:8-10

In the Old Testament the souls of sinners went to hell – Lk 16:23

In the New Testament the souls of saints go to be with the Lord – Eph 5:30-32; Eph 2:6; 2 Cor 5:8; Rev 5:8-10

In the New Testament the souls of sinners without Christ also go to hell – Rev 20:13

After our resurrection saints are as the angels of God in heaven – Rev 5:10-12; Matt 22:30

At the rapture, New Testament saints are given glorified bodies – Phil 3:21; 1 Thes 4:13-18; 1 Cor 15:50-55

In glorified bodies we live forever – Jn 5:24; 1 Jn 2:25; 2 Cor 5:4

At the Second Advent we return with the Lord to fight with him against his enemies – Rev 19:8, 14

During the millennial reign of Jesus we live and reign with Christ on the earth – Rev 1:5-6; Rev 5:10
