What Does the Book of Proverbs Say About Being Fat

Proverbs 11:25 ; 13:4 ; 15:30 ; 28:25

In this lesson we are going to look at a word that is used in our everyday language but when it comes to the Bible use of this word we will see that it has a different definition. The word is fat. Now we use this word primarily in our society today in connection with being overweight. But the word of God uses it a different way.

There are several different definition for the word fat. One of these is the way we think of the word and use it today. The word is also used as a noun like in the term saturated fat. The definition for this word as it is used in the verses for this study means rich, wealthy, or affluent. Therefore for this study the book of Proverbs says it good to be fat and also is a consequence of making good choices.

How to be Fat :

1)  Being generous (Proverbs 11:25)

  • The verse says that the liberal soul shall be made fat. The word liberal in the bible is used as being generous.
  • In business you have to spend money to make money. This is what the proverbs is implying that the more you give the more you will have.
  • Two good verse for God rewarding giving are Galatians 6:7-9 and 2 Corinthians 9:6-8.

2)  Being Diligent (Proverbs 13:4)

  • Diligence can be a deciding factor between success and failure many times. Here it is connected with being fat.
  • Note Proverbs 10:4 and Hebrews 11:6

3)  Having a good report (Proverbs 15:30)

  • This verse is talking about having a good testimony. When other can speak well of you it is said to affect your health. The bones being fat would be connected with being healthy.
  • Note the honor roll of faith as it is called in Hebrews 11 are said to have obtained a good report by faith (Hebrews 11:39).

4)  Trust in the Lord (Proverbs 15:30)

  • All of the above will simply take trusting in the Lord. The more we can do this the better off we are going to be both physically and spiritually.
