Train Up a Child (Part 2)
Proverbs 22:6
In the second part of this lesson, we are going to be focusing on the words “Train up”. In the first part of this lesson, we saw that the verse is not referencing making a child saved or spiritual be we focused on the way we should want a child to go based on the phrase in the book of Proverbs.
As stated in the last lesson the verse is not a guarantee that your child will stay in church or be spiritual, but the verse still works. Think about training for a minute. Most training is to develop muscle memory so that you will eventually do things without thinking about what you are doing. What many parents do not even realize is that they are training their children even when they are not intending to train them the problem is many times, they are not training them up, but down.
We have all seen the kid screaming at Wal-Mart and the parents saying over and over again if you don’t stop something bad is going to happen. The kid does not stop and nothing bad happens. The reason the kid does not stop is because he has been trained previously so that nothing is going to happen. So, whether we like it or not training works.
In this lesson we will be using the thought of training in the sense of some form of athletic training. When it comes to athletic training some of the most common failures in training are overtraining, incorrect mindset, and lack of structure or planning.
In this lesson we will use the word Train to show some important things that must be in our training if we are going to as the verse says “Train up a child”
T – Time
- Training takes time and is not accomplished in one day.
- Time is one of our biggest challenges in life (James 4:14 / Ephesians 5:16)
R – Repetition
- Repetition is one of the key components in training (1 Peter 1:1-14)
A – Attention to Detail
- In training details are crucial just as in raising children the details sometimes can make or break a key training session. (Zechariah 4:10)
I – Inspection
- In the military they have surprise inspections, as a parent you must stay on top of everything (Proverbs 27:23)
N – Negativity
- To train for anything we will have to deny ourselves certain things. You cannot run a marathon by eating sweets and laying around all day.
- Paul told Timothy to reprove, rebuke, and exhort which is 2/3 negative (2 Tim 4:2)
