The One True Universal Constant
2 Peter 3:1-18
In physics there are several universal constant such as the speed of light in a vacuum, charge of a single electron, the gravitational constant etc. But in the real world that we inhabit nothing every really stays the same. Everything seems to be constantly changing. Some have even said that change is the only constant in life.
In this sermon we are going learn from the word of God that there is at least one true universal constant that is the same. Even when the universe is destroyed this constant will still be the same. What is this constant? It is God.
Background for our passage:
In this passage Peter is closing out his 2nd epistle and he is trying to stir up the readers to remembrance of things they have heard and learned before. This passage also will give us a description for the end of our universe as we know it. In verses 10-13 we see the destruction of the earth and our universe by God. This will take place after the Millennial reign of Jesus Christ on this earth and immediately before the Great White Throne Judgment.
Man says that we are bringing about climate change with pollution, but the reality is we are headed for a climatic change that has nothing to do with pollution. As this text shows us and others we will see in this sermon, the planet will be destroyed, but there is one constant that will remain the same.
Hebrews 1:10-12 ; Psalm 102:25-27
- God wears clothes (Psalm 104:1-6)
- These clothes are said to be his glory (Psalm 19:1-4)
- They were made by his hands (Psalm 8:3)
- It is interesting how Jesus’ clothes picture the universe as well (John19:23-24 ; Matthew 21:42)
As we see from the passage in Hebrews and Psalm 102 God is one day going to change his clothes. He is going to fold up the heavens and discard them. He will then create a New Heaven and a New Earth (2 Peter 3:8-12 ; Revelation 21:1-3). This New Heaven and this New Earth will consist of righteousness.
God is life and life only exist for us in his son (1 John 5:9-13,20). This is the one true constant. The question is where will you be when God changes his clothes?
Going back to our passage in 2 Peter let us look at somethings we as saved people can do in regards to these future events.
Somethings we can do regarding this events:
1) Remember that it is going to happen (Verses 8-12)
2) Look for these things and what precedes them according to the scriptures (Verses 12-13)
3) Be diligent to stay true and clean (Verses 14-15)
4) Grow in grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ (Verses 18)
