The Last Laugh
Psalm 22 records David’s prophecy of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In v.7 he wrote, “All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head…”.
Imagine that, as Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, died on the cross, the very people he came to save laughed him to scorn. They mocked their King and Messiah and laughed as he suffered unmercifully under the wrath of God to pay for their sins and ours.
Since then, many souls have mockingly laughed at Jesus Christ, when presented with his gospel and forgiveness. They have mocked him, rejected him, and cursed his name.
But we have a common saying among us. As the saying goes, “He who laughs last, laughs best”. The day is coming when the “tables will be turned”. And it will be the Lord’s turn to laugh. He gets the last laugh.
Ps 2:1-4 He will laugh at the kings and rulers who rage against him.
Ps 37:12-13 He will laugh at the wicked who plot against the just.
Prov 1:24-30 He will laugh at those who reject him and his counsel.
And according to Lk 6:20-23, the day is coming when we will laugh, too, after enduring all of the world’s reproach and laughter against us and our Savior.
This compels us to do two things. First, we should not let their laughter keep us from telling them about Jesus. They need to know, regardless of whether they laugh or not. Some of them still get saved. Second, we should put up with their laughter until Jesus says you don’t have to put up with it anymore. Our turn is coming. We get the last laugh with Jesus.
