The Causes of My Soul

Lamentations 3:58

In the passage Jeremiah is speaking to us about his imprisonment and personal anguish of his soul in the dungeon. We can make a spiritual application from the verse in order to learn a great truth about our soul.

What is a soul? 

The easiest way that I know how to define a soul is that it is the real you. Your soul is a body that resides inside your body. The flesh is nothing more than clothing for the soul. When you die, the clothing of your soul is removed and your soul goes to heaven or hell depending upon what you did with the Lord Jesus Christ. (Note Luke 16:19-31, the rich man in hell)

What is wrong with our soul?

• When Adam was created he was made a living soul (Genesis 2:7)
• Adam sin affected his soul (Genesis 2:17)
• Note that in the O.T. the soul seem to be connected to physical life (Genesis 12:13 ; 17:14 ; 19:20)
• As a result of sin the soul is stuck to the flesh (Leviticus 5:1-17)
• The problem for us is that one day the soul will be required (Luke 12:20)

What is the fix for the soul?

• It must be redeemed (Psalm 49:8)
• In the O.T. the blood of animals was the atonement (Leviticus 17:11)
• For us today Jesus’ Blood is the atonement for our souls (Hebrews 9:11-12)
• This makes Jesus Christ the only one you could plead the causes of our soul because his soul was the payment that God accepted (Isaiah 53:10-12)

What is your soul worth?

In Mark 8:36-37 Jesus declares the true value of a soul. The question is what will you give in exchange for your soul?
