Jesus Christ our Passover

Jesus Christ Our Passover

1 Corinthians 5:7

The context of this passage deals with the fact that the people in the church at Corinth were not dealing with known sin among them. Note that in verse 7 Jesus is called our Passover. In this lesson we are going to look at the Passover that the Jews celebrated the night they left Egypt and how it became one of the feasts they were to keep. This Passover typifies the Lord Jesus Christ in many ways. Here we will look at these types and show how Jesus is now our Passover.

Types from the Passover: (Exodus 12:1-11)

1)  A lamb (verse 3), the lamb (verse 4), your lamb (verse 5). This makes a great sermon but also Jesus is the lamb of God that takes away sin (John 1:29-31).

2)  The lamb was to be without blemish (verse 5). This points to the sinlessness of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 4:14-16).

3)  Kill it in the evening (verse 6). This points to the fact that Jesus died in the afternoon.

4)  The blood had to be placed on the door posts in order to not have the firstborn die (verse7). Jesus’ blood must be applied to us for our sins.

5)  The flesh of the lamb was roast with fire (verse 8). This points to Jesus Christ being judged for our sin and becoming our sin offering (1 Corinthians 5:21).

6)  The lamb was to be eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs (verse 8). This points to Jesus’ sinlessness and that he was offered vinegar on the cross (Luke 23:26).

7)  The lamb was not to be sodden with water (verse 8). This points to Jesus saying “I thirst” from the cross (John 19:28).

8)  Lamb was roasted whole, no bones broken (Exodus 12:46). This points to Jesus dying before the soldiers breaking his legs (John 19:31-37).

Jesus our Passover:

In the observance of the Passover the Jews were always looking back to their redemption from Egypt and God passing over them regarding the death of the first born. But when Jesus eats the Passover with the disciples before his crucifixion he changes its meaning for them. Note how he sets up the Lord’s supper for them in Luke 22:14-23. So, from this point on Jesus is our Passover and when we celebrate the Lord Supper we are showing his death till he comes (1 Corinthians 11:26).
