God Given Lights, Gen 1:3

God is light [1 Jn 1:5] and in the world is darkness [Gen 1:2, 4-5].  So, the Lord has given us lights in this dark world, which is governed by the “rulers of the darkness of this world,” Eph 6:12.  The God given lights are:

The sun, moon and stars – Gen 1:14-17 – these lights are given by God to give light upon the earth.

Jesus Christ – Gen 1:3; Jn 1:4-9 – when God said, Let there be light, I believe he manifested himself in Jesus Christ as light.  When Jesus was here during his earthly ministry, he said, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

The gospel – 2 Cor 4:3-6 – in this passage we read about “the light of the glorious gospel of Christ.”  When we preach the gospel to others, God shines “in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”  And when sinners get saved, they are called “out of darkness into his marvelous light,” 1 Pet 2:9.

The word of God – Ps 119:105, Ps 119:130 – the words of God are a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.  You cannot walk uprightly in this dark world without following the words of God.  “The entrance of thy words giveth light.”  Christians who live in this world without following the words of God “stumble,” Prov 4:19.  Christians who walk in this dark world following the words of God are on a path that “shineth more and more unto the perfect day,” Prov 4:18.  If you are not in the words of God daily, you need to start reading them and following them everyday, from now on.

Us – Eph 5:8 – we are the children of light, now that we are saved.  There must be a distinction between us (light) and the world (darkness).  Without preaching again what Bro Tony preached Sunday night [see his message, The Armor of Light], our lives should reprove the unfruitful works of darkness and should point sinners to our Savior.  Do you have enough light to do these two things?  At least be a night light.  There’s enough light in a night light to see in the dark.

Conclusion: these are our God given lights.  As children of light, we should be following the light of God’s words and publishing the gospel to others.
