Ps 37:4 says, Delight thyself also in the Lord.  By simply checking the references to the word “delight” in the Bible, we are able to find an interesting comparison between the Lord and the godly and a revealing contrast between the Lord and the ungodly.  The people who are godly delight in exactly the same things the Lord delights in and the people who are ungodly don’t delight in the things he delights in.

We’ll only examine three things in which the Lord delights because after you have seen these three you will clearly understand the parallels and the disparities between the two groups.  Further examination would be unnecessary and redundant in order to determine which group you are in.

We present these comparisons and contrasts with the hope that you will delight yourself in the things in which the Lord delights.

Delight thyself in the Lord – Ps 37:3-4 – the Lord delights in his attributes that you would understand and appreciate if you really knew him – Jer 9:23-24 – his lovingkindness [Ps 36:7], his judgment [Deut 32:4, Ps 9:16] and his righteousness [Ps 7:17, 11:7] – the godly will delight themselves in the Lord – they will know each of these attributes well and each will be their delight – the ungodly, on the other hand, delight in themselves and in knowing their own hearts [Prov 18:1-2; Jer 17:9] – they are lovers of themselves [2 Tim 3:2].

If you are ungodly, when you finish loving yourself and discovering your own heart, you are going to be disappointed – the Lord is much more delightful and his lovingkindness is much greater than your love of yourself – his righteousness is perfect and exceedingly better than the filthy rags of our righteousness – his judgment is finished in Jesus Christ whereby we are justified for ever in him!!

Delight thyself in his words – 1 Sam 15:22 – this entire universe was brought into existence by God’s words and it is kept in store by those same words [Heb 11:3; 2 Pet 3:5-7] – something so powerful that it orders and maintains this universe can certainly order and maintain your life.

The godly love God’s words and delight in them [Ps 1:1-3] – the ungodly, on the other hand, have no delight in his words [Jer 6:10] – when you delight in God’s words there is a connection that develops between you and God that is beyond compare to anything other relationship that you have in this world.

Delight thyself in his truth – Prov 12:22 – the Lord delights in those who deal truly – those who have a true assessment of him, a true assessment of themselves, a true assessment of others, a true assessment of the world, and a true assessment of the natural and the supernatural – Jesus said, Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free [Jn 8:32] – thankfully God cannot lie [Titus 1:2] even though there are many who will teach you to the contrary.

The godly delight in truth and true testimonies of the Lord [Ps 119:24, 29-31] – the ungodly, on the other hand, delight in exactly the opposite – they delight in lies [Ps 62:4].

Conclusion: So, which group are you in?  If you are ungodly and want to be godly, trust Jesus Christ – he is all in which the godly delight [he’s God, he’s the Word, and he’s the truth] – if you are godly and you want to grow then delight more in him, in his words, and in the truth.
