Competing Lights
Matthew 6:19-24 ; Luke 11:33-36
In both of these passages we see similar things as well as a different context. But in both passages we see the phrase “if the light in you be darkness”. In this sermon we will try to show what is meant by light being darkness as well as make a spiritual application from both passages for us today.
Some thoughts about light from the Bible:
- When we think of light there is more to light than sunlight (Genesis 1:3 ; Psalm 74:16)
- There is more to darkness than the absence of light as well (Isaiah 45:7 ; Genesis 1:2-5)
- God is light and in him is no darkness (1 John 1:5)
- There is a true light (John 1:1-9)
- There is a false light (2 Corinthians 11:13-15)
- Light dwell in a way because it is always moving (Job 38:19), darkness has a place as well (Job 38:19).
- Light can be parted (Job 38:24) and when it is parted we see it in 7 Colors (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet)
{Use slide show for the comparison of Primary Paint Colors verse Primary Colors of Light}
Primary colors of paint (Red, Yellow, Blue) mix in equal parts and you get Black (Type of Satan)
Primary colors of light (Red, Green, Blue) mix in equal parts and you get White (Type of God)
{Use Object Lesson with Red, Green, Blue light bulb and shadows they produce to illustrate above truths]
The shadows of RGB become Cyan, Magenta, Yellow which are the color cartridges in ink jet printers. (This makes a type of man, which is a mixture of God’s light, but just like in a printer Satan likes to add in the black cartridge)
This is now a connection to the light that is in the being darkness.
Spiritual Application from Matthew and Luke
Within us are two competing lights. We cannot serve two masters. When we allow the dark light to overpower God’s light the result will be a dim candle for the world to see. This is accomplished when we place our treasures on things in the earth instead of heaven.
