A Study in Galatians
Lesson #1 Another Gospel (Galatians 1:6-9)
In this first study from the book of Galatians we are going to be looking at the phrase “Another Gospel”. This is one of the first things that Paul had to say in his letter to the Galatians. He calls them out on the fact they have been removed from the one that called them into the grace of Christ to another gospel.
What did Paul mean by the Phrase another gospel?
As you read through the book of Galatians you will see that some of the people in Galatia were trying to mix the Old Testament Law with salvation by grace through faith. They were wanting the Gentiles who believed in Jesus to follow the Old Testament Law. They were adding this to Salvation. Therefore Paul referred to this as another gospel.
What is the Gospel that Paul preached?
Paul preached the gospel of the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ according to 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. Paul referred to this gospel in different ways such as the gospel of God, the gospel of Christ, and even my gospel. But he never mixed works or the Law with this gospel.
This is also the gospel that we are to preach today. The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ by faith alone plus nothing. That is the method by which we are saved today.
Is there more than one gospel in the word of God?
When it comes to the word “gospel” we must be careful and mind the context in which it occurs because the word of God does give more than one gospel. For instance, Mark 1:14-15 Jesus preached the gospel of the kingdom of God. Note that he told them to repent and believe the gospel. This could not be the gospel of the death burial and resurrection because Jesus Christ had not been crucified or risen again at this point. So what is this gospel? It is dealing with the Jews in regards to the Kingdom of God, this will also have an application in the Tribulation to the Jews once again, but it is not the gospel that we preach today.
Another place that you will see a different gospel is in Revelation 14:6-7. It is called the everlasting gospel. This one also pertains to the Tribulation and 2nd Advent of Jesus Christ.
Let us take heed to Paul’s warning for the Galatians and make sure we preach the correct gospel for today and add nothing to it such as works.
