The Humanity of Jesus Christ

The Humanity of Jesus Christ

1Timothy 3:16

In this lesson we are going to be looking at proofs for the humanity of Jesus Christ. This is fact is called a great mystery in 1 Timothy 3:16. It is not easy to understand how God could be manifest in the flesh, but it is a must if we are to be saved. Jesus had to be God and yet he had to be man in order to save us from our sins.

Proofs for the Humanity of Jesus Christ:

1)  He had human ancestry.

  • In Luke 2:7 we see that Jesus was born of a woman, note that Galatians 4:4 says he was made of a woman.
  • Mary goes back to King David through his son Nathan as seen in her genealogy given in Luke 3. Therefore, Jesus is of the seed of David (Acts 13:23).

2)  He had a physical nature (John 1:14)

  • According to Hebrews 2:14 he partook of flesh and blood as a man.
  • As having a physical nature of flesh and blood he is said to; Grow (Luke 2:40), Learn obedience (Hebrews 5:8), Suffer (Hebrews 2:18).
  • This physical nature would have included a body, soul, and a spirit. This is clearly seen at his death on the Cross (Luke 23:39-53).

3)  He was tempted (Luke 4:1:13)

  • Jesus being in the flesh explains James 1:13. Jesus was man therefore he has lust (hunger) and could be tempted to sin as a man (James 1:14).
  • He was tempted and yet never sinned (Hebrews 4:14-16).
  • This gives us one that can succour us (Hebrews 2:18).

4)  He could die (Hebrews 9:27)

  • This is why he came to die for sinners (Romans 5:8 ; Hebrews 2:9)
  • Without his death there could be no resurrection from the dead. Without his death, burial, and resurrection there could be no salvation for us.
