Are You in the Way, or Are You in the Way?

Are You in the Way, or Are You in the Way

Genesis 24:1-67

The passage for this sermon details where Abraham sent his servant to get a bride for his son Isaac. In this passage we see some beautiful typology. The servant is a type of the Holy Spirit, Isaac is a type of Jesus Christ and Rebekah is a type of the church.

Here we will be looking at this example on how to be led of the Lord in the way (verse 27), instead of being in God’s way when he is trying to lead us. We will be using some illustrations regarding being led in the way of finding a spouse, but this could apply to ministry and many other areas where we need the leadership of the Lord in our lives.

How can we be led of the Lord:

1)  Take yourself out of the equation (verse 4)

  • Neither Isaac nor Rebekah were really involved outside of Rebekah making the choice. The servant did all the arranging (Matthew 26:39-42)

2)  Trust God (verses 7, 14)

  • Isaac stayed home but trusted the servant.
  • Note the servant as a type of the Holy Spirit had everyone else’s best interest at heart.
  • God always has your best interest in mind, we just have to trust him (John 16:12-14)

3)  Be faithful in the way (verses 15-20 & 62-63)

  • Rebekah was definitely faithful in regards to offering the stranger water and supplying water for his camels. Isaac is meditating at eventide by the well when they return.
  • Faithfulness is the key to everything with God (1 Corinthians 4:1-2)

4)  Stick to spiritual principles no matter what happens (verse 5,62)

  • The deal was that the servant was not to take Isaac back to the land where he came from, even if the woman would not come.
  • You must stick to what you know is right and true according to God’s word no matter how good a situation might look if you want to be led of God.
