The Way Which Thou Shalt Go, Ps 32:8

The Way Which Thou Shalt Go

The Lord said that he will do three things for you in the way which thou shalt go. He said:

I will instruct thee.  Throughout our lives, we are faced with choices that we must make.  And these choices are usually like the proverbial “Fork” in the road.  You either go this way or that way.  And if you will stop and ask God for directions before making your choice, he will instruct you in the way which thou shalt go.  This is very important.  You don’t want to get down the wrong road and have to say, “O Lord, now what”?

For example, when a person is faced with the decision about whether to receive Jesus Christ as his Savior or not, the Lord will instruct them to receive Jesus.  This is the right choice, though all the world and all their friends may try to convince them otherwise the right choice is Jesus.

He will instruct you about each decision along the way of eternal life after that… which Bible to read, which church to join, which person to marry, which job to take, etc.

I will teach thee.  Along the way that you go, the Lord has many things to teach you about himself.  His desire is that you know him.  So that you know who he is, and how he thinks, and how he judges, and how he commands, and what he likes, and so forth.  He will also teach you much about you, your thoughts, your motives, and your desires.  Because, along the way he wants to change these things in you from the way of the old man to the way of the new man.  This is so important in learning the way of eternal life and all of its benefits.  And what he teaches, you will be able to use to help others along the way.

I will guide thee.  And he said I will guide thee with mine eye.  Imagine that the God of the universe has so much interest in you and your life that he will single you out for his special attention and keep his eye on you.  That’s hard to grasp.  Nevertheless, this is exactly what he said he would do.  Throughout each day, when you are walking along the way which thou shalt go, the Lord will guide you through the day each step of the way.

He’s watching you, but he wants you to look up to him. He wants you to be aware all the time of what he is leading you to do.  A crude illustration is a batter who is looking at the coach between each pitch to get the signal for whether he should swing and how he should swing.  Or the communication between the pitcher and the catcher for what pitch is coming next.  Or the quarterback and the coaches on the sideline.  This is communication between you and the Lord.

Conclusion: The Lord gives you instructions on the right decision at each fork in the road.  But you have to check in with him to see what the right choice is.  “Lord, am I in the right way”.  Along the way he teaches you.  But you need to pay attention in his “school”.  “What am I to learn here”?  And as he’s teaching you, he is going to be guiding you every step of the way.  But you have to be constantly aware of his leadership and do what he leads you to do.  You don’t want to miss his “signal”.
