What a Young Person Can Do

What a Young Person Can Do

1 Samuel 17:1-52

In this lesson we will focus on David who despite being young accomplished a great feat. Many today do not believe that young people can do very much especially when it comes to doing something for God. But sometimes young people are just what God needs to do the job.

Before we get into the outline for the lesson it is important to note that David did not set out kill Goliath. He was probably not even thinking about even fighting in the battle. But he went where he was told, did what he was told, and trusted God and look how things turned out.

Every day we face spiritual giants in our lives and many times we are like the children of Israel we just hide in the tents and refuse to battle. But there are many spiritual giants out there that God wants us to defeat and what he wants us to realize is that like in the case of David he will do the fighting for us if we just trust and obey him.

David’s Steps To Becoming a Giant Killer :

1) He kept himself busy (1 Samuel 17:15)

a. David is seen here being faithful to his father and his job of feeding the sheep.

b. If we would just be faithful with what God gives us then when the Giant comes along we would be prepared for battle.

c. Note Proverbs 13:4 & Proverbs 21:25

2) He obeyed his father (1 Samuel 17:17-20)

a. Without being able to obey God’s word we will never have success at killing Giants.

b. 1 Samuel 15:22-23 God says here that obeying him is better than sacrifice.

c. Ephesians 6:1-2 Honoring our father and mother is a commandment.

d. Note some things in verse 20. David rose up early; he didn’t stay in bed all day. He also left the sheep with a keeper, he was responsible with what he had been put in charge of. Not also he went where he was sent, he didn’t take detours or waste time.

3) He was prepared for the battle with Goliath (1Samuel 17:32-36)

a. His preparation came by being faithful in keeping his father’s sheep.

b. While keeping his father sheep he had delivered them form the lion and the bear.

c. The skills we need for killing giants is developed when we are just doing the small things that we are told to do.

4) He trusted in God (1 Samuel 17:37)

a. Once again we see that we learn something when we are just doing what we are told and stay faithful to what God has given us. David learned that he could trust God we he had to battle the lion and the bear. Therefore he knew he could trust God when he fought Goliath.

b. One of the reasons we never kill any giants is because we’ve have never been faithful enough to learn to trust God.

c. We must remember Proverbs 3:5-6.

5) He had a vision of victory (1 Samuel 17:29)

a. David believed in his heart that God would deliver the giant into his hand, and this vision came by all the preceding steps.

b. Do you have a vision of what God can do with those giants that you face daily? Remember Proverbs 29:18.
