The Form of a Servant, Phil 2:5-8

The Form of a Servant

Have you decided today that you want to serve the Lord?  Then you need to take upon you the form of a servant like Jesus did.  This requires 7 things.  If you do these things, you will be the servant God wants you to be.  If you don’t, you will never be the servant he wants you to be.  These 7 things are:

Willingness.  Jesus was certainly willing; he offered himself, Heb 9:14, and prayed, “not my will, but thine, be done”, Lk 22:42.  In 1 Chr 29:5, David asked, “who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the Lord”?  God doesn’t force you to serve him.  But he will gladly accept your service if you are willing to consecrate yourself to him.  To be consecrated is to be dedicated to his sacred purpose.

Faithfulness.  Heb 3:1-2, Jesus was faithful.  1 Cor 4:2, “Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful”.  Faithful in attendance.  Faithful in giving.  Faithful in devotions and study.  Faithful in the little things, Lk 16:10-12.

Fear of God.  Heb 5:7, Jesus was heard in that he feared.  You must fear God and not man.  The fear of man bringeth a snare.  You must do what God said regardless of your own fear, your family’s fear, or others’ disapproval.  In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence, Prov 14:26.  By the way, we’re not talking about you pursuing some hair-brained foolish idea.

Humility.  Phil 2:8, Jesus humbled himself.  No reputation.  You have to be able to take orders.  Service is not about you.  It’s about the Lord and it’s about others.  Are you using God to do what you want, or is God using you to do what he wants?

Obedience.  Phil 2:8, Jesus became obedient unto death.  You must obey the scriptures and the Holy Spirit.  A fellow we know has been searching the scriptures to see whether his church is preaching truth.  He has found that they aren’t.  And he has been changing in obedience to the words of God.

Trust.  Gal 2:16 the faith of Jesus Christ.  Gal 2:20 the faith of the Son of God.  You must trust God to accomplish his purpose in you and trust him to take care of you until you finish your course.  Like he did for Jesus.  Like he did for Paul.  And this faith is not our own feeble faith, but the faith of Jesus.

Patience.  Heb 12:1-2.  We must give God time to do his will in us, prepare us, change us, make us into the servants he wants us to be.  This is not an overnight process.

Conclusion: if you have in mind to serve God, then these 7 things are essential to your development into the form of a servant.
