Dwelling by the Well
(Genesis 25:7-11)
In this sermon we are going to look at several significant events that happened at or in association with wells throughout the word of God. We will then use the well as a type of a personal meeting with God through his word to make some spiritual applications for our lives today.
Events at Wells:
1) Genesis 16:1-14 (Well of him that liveth and seeth me)
2) Genesis 21:14-21 (Hagar rescued at a well)
3) Genesis 24:11-15 (Servant of Abraham meets Rachel at well)
4) Genesis 24:64 (Isaac is waiting near the well)
5) Exodus 2:15 (Moses sat down by the well)
6) 2 Samuel 17:18 (Jonathan & Ahimaaz hide in the well)
The well is a type of God’s word and a personal meeting with him:
In each of the cases from above the people at the well are in a serious life situation when they encounter the well. We also see that God makes some kind of provision for each of these people involved. What you find in the well is the water, which is a type of the word of God (John 4:14 ; John 6:63). But the crisis are resolved in going for the water or being close to it.
- Proverbs 13:14 “The Law of the wise is a fountain of life to depart from the snares of death”
- Proverbs 14:27 “The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life to depart from the snares of death”
Application for us:
1) Salvation (Example woman at the well)
- You must have this personal experience and meeting with God. In order for any of the rest of these points to work.
2) Provision (Example; Servant of Abraham, Hagar)
- Some of God’s greatest provision comes through his word.
3) Deliverance (Example; Johnathan and Ahimaaz)
- The word of God is our best hiding place.
4) Comfort (Example; Hagar and Isaac)
- Now we can see why Isaac dwelled by the well of Lahai-roi.
- Psalms 84:6 would anyone follow your example of living by the well?
