Appreciation For Mothers
This is Mothers Day and we usually give our mothers special attention on this day. We show our appreciation for mothers. The best thing you can do for your mother is to:
Honor her – Eph 6:1-3 is the first command with promise. To honor is to regard or treat with admiration and respect. You address the judge in a court of law as, “Your Honor”. You mother brought you into this world. She nursed, fed, bathed, clothed, comforted, transported, and cared for you. But she is not your maid, chauffeur, and nanny. She’s not here for your pleasure. You’re here for her pleasure. Honor her.
Naomi was Ruth’s mother-in-law, but Ruth followed Naomi like a daughter should follow her mother. They were as close as a mother and daughter could ever be.
Obey her – Eph 6:1. Do what she says. The Bible speaks of the “law of thy mother”. A good mom doesn’t fear the kids and give in to their whims. Her children don’t run the home. In Prov 31:1 Lemuel’s mother taught him. Heb 13:7 says, “Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation”. When you obey your mother, her faith can become your faith like Lois and Eunice’s faith became Timothy’s, 2 Tim 1:5.
A preacher friend of mine has five children. They are all serving God in the ministry today. I asked one of the sons why he thought his whole family followed Dad in the ministry. Without hesitation he said, “My mother always practiced at home what my father preached at church.” Follow your mother’s faith.
Bless her – Prov 31:28. Ask God to look favorably on her and to confer prosperity and happiness upon her. According to Prov 30:11 we live in a generation that doth not bless their mother. Prov 20:20 instead, they curse their mother. Be a blessing to her. What a great way to show appreciation for mothers.
Look at Jn 19:26-27. “When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home”. Through all the agony of the cross, Jesus saw fit to be a blessing to his mother before he died.
Praise her – Prov 31:30. To praise is to express a favorable judgment of. Express approval of and offer gratitude to your mother. Praise her for her work and thank her continuously, not just on Mother’s Day. Be very specific about the things for which you are praising her. Praise her for her prayers for you, the meals she cooks (nourishing), her love for you, and how she shows it.
She’s a God-fearing woman, not a woman who fears men and seeks worldly approval. She trusts God. Praise her and praise God for her.
Conclusion: these are excellent ways to show appreciation for mothers.
And consider Gal 4:26, “Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all”. When you receive Jesus Christ as your Savior, you become a child of God. God is your Father and New Jerusalem is your mother. Honor her with a good testimony.
If you have not yet been saved, then trust Jesus now, so that New Jerusalem will be your heavenly mother and God will be your heavenly Father.
