A Study in the Book of Romans: Lesson #9 Benefits of the Spirit

A Study in the Book of Romans

Lesson #9 : Benefits of the Spirit (Romans 8:1-39)

In Romans chapter 8 we see many things about the Holy Spirit. In this lesson we are going to look at some of the verses in blocks and see some of the benefits of the Spirit. These benefits are important to us for salvation and also life after salvation.

Before looking at the benefits we must make a note in regards to the first verse. This verse connects to what was studied in the previous lesson from Chapter 7. It says that there is no condemnation to those in Christ Jesus. While spiritually you are sealed in Christ and you cannot lose your salvation you must consider the second half of the verse. There are still consequences if we walk after the flesh and not after the spirit. When we do not walk after the Spirit we will be chastened of God if we do not get matters right with God. We can also lose rewards at the Judgment Seat of Christ. Even though we cannot lose our salvation we must consider the second half of verse 1.

Benefits of the Spirit:

1)  Life (verse 1-13)

  • The law was weak through the flesh because we have Adam’s sinful nature and as a result of this we are dead in sins and trespasses (Ephesians 2:1).
  • Jesus came in the likeness of sinful flesh and condemned sin in the flesh because he lived without sin.
  • Therefore in Christ we are freed from the law of sin and death through the law of the Spirit of life in Jesus Christ (verse 3).
  • Therefore we have life because of the Spirit and also the Spirit will raise us up after death (verse 11).

2)  Witness to being God’s Children (verses 14-16)

  • Many times after salvation we may not feel saved due to sin or circumstances in our lives, but God has given us the Holy Spirit and he bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.

3)  Redemption of the Body (verse 18-25)

  • As a result of Salvation our soul is sealed until the day of Redemption (Ephesians 4:30).  But one day in the future, at the Rapture of the Church, our body will be redeemed as well.
  • In Ephesians 1:13-14 we are said to be given the Spirit as the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession.
  • The Spirit of God is given to us in earnest until God redeems our body at the Rapture. So here in Romans when it says we are saved by hope (verse 24), it is not saying that we are hoping we are saved but that because of the spirit we have the hope of our body being redeemed at the Rapture.

4)  Prayer (verses 26-27)

  • While we are waiting for the redemption of the body we have the Spirit that helpeth our infirmities by praying for us when we do not know what to pray for.
