Honour, 1 Sam 2:29-30

Honour is a good name or public esteem; outward respect or admiration; a showing of usually merited respect.  According to Prov 22:1, honour is desirable.  So, if honour is a good thing to have, the question is, “How do you get it?”

You don’t get honour by seeking honour – you don’t get honor by trying to make a name for yourself.  Don’t seek your own honour [1 Sam 15:30].  Don’t seek honour from others [Jn 5:44].  Don’t let men promote you to honour [Num 22:17, 37; 24:11].  Barak led Naphtali and Zebulun in the defeat of Sisera, but not for his own honour [Jud 4:6-9].

You get honour:

By honoring God – 1 Sam 2:29, 30 – God gave the priesthood to Aaron and to his sons.  Eli and his sons were descendants of Aaron.  Hophni and Phinehas, Eli’s sons, were terrible priests, lying with women who assembled at the tabernacle door, stealing from the sacrifices of the people, and eating the fat of the sacrifices.  The sin of the young men was very great before the Lord [1 Sam 2:17].  So, God said, they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.  Yet he also said, “them that honour me I will honour.”  Jesus Christ honored God and now he is honored with a name that is above every name [Phil 2:9-11].

By humbling yourself and fearing the Lord – Prov 22:4 – Ps 15:4 he honoureth them that fear the Lord.  Prov18:12 before honour is humility.  When you humble yourself under the Lord, he will exalt you in due time.  Honour comes from the Lord [1 Chr 29:12].  God honored these kings: David; 2 Chr 1:11-12, Solomon; 2 Chr 18:1, Jehoshaphat; 2 Chr 32:27, Hezekiah; Dan 5:18, Nebuchadnezzar].

By following after righteousness and mercy – Prov 21:21.  When you follow God’s righteousness, it leads you to honor.  When you shew mercy like the Lord does, it leads you to honor.  The good Samaritan in Lk 10:37 has forever been honored for his mercy to the man that was left half dead.

By seeking, finding, and embracing wisdom – Prov 8:17-18 wisdom honors those who love her and seek her early.  Prov 3:13-16 in wisdom’s left hand is honour.  Prov 4:7-8 wisdom shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.  And sometimes, the wisdom you need comes from reproof.  Prov 13:18 he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.

Conclusion: so, if you want to be honored, don’t seek honor for yourself, or from others, or by promotion.  You don’t need to make a name for yourself.  Make a name for God, instead.  Honor God.  You’ll get honor from him, in due time.
