His name is Jesus. But from theses passages, you can see that he has some other names, as well.
Is 7:14… call his name Immanuel (God with us).
Is 9:6-7 … a child is born … and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.
Matt 1:20-21 … thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
The birth of Jesus fulfilled not only the prophecies of Gabriel to Mary and of the Lord to Joseph, but also the prophecies of Isaiah toJudah. In these, we find that this Son of God has some remarkable names: Immanuel, Jesus, Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. In these names we find great admiration for our Lord today. By these names, he is the answer to everything we need.
We need God with us [Immanuel]. Thank the Lord that the God we worship is with us all the time. He is not “out there somewhere” in a place we hope to arrive if we can appease him. He said that he will never leave us nor forsake us.
We need something Wonderful. And we know from experience and from the great hymn that Jesus is all that thrills our souls. The world is always looking for a new source of excitement and entertainment. They need something to WOW them from time to time. You know what they need. They need something wonderful, magnificent, superb, breathtaking, amazing, astonishing, fantastic, brilliant, and great. And Jesus is all of that and more!
We need somebody they can talk to anytime of the day or night. We need to be able to confide in someone, tell him our deepest thoughts, our greatest dreams, our hopes and desires. We need to be able to talk over great decisions with someone. We need to be able to get straight, honest advice and good advice, to boot. We have to know that this person isn’t going to lead us astray or betray us. We need to be able to rely on what this person says. In a word, we need the “Counseller … because there is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel against the Lord,” (Prov 21:30).
We need a way to deal with fear. People today are scared. They are scared of death!! They are scared of offending each other, they are scared of identity theft, they are scared of retirement, they are scared of getting cancer, they are scared of a heart attack, they are scared of burglars, they are scared of the government, they are scared of failure, they are scared of terrorists, they are scared to talk about Christ, and the further we go down the road the more that people in sales and media are going to keep scaring them. You know what they need? They need the mighty God!! Ps 56:3, 11, What time I am afraid I will trust in thee. In God have I put my trust, I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.
We need a good family life. The word is that the family is breaking down and so the kids are on the loose. A national radio broadcast is devoted solely to the family – Focus on the family. Kids are suffering from a lack of stability in the home. Homes are busting up as soon as they are made. The men who are marrying may look mature but they lack the experience, maturity, knowledge, wisdom, steadfastness, faithfulness, and determination to be good fathers. They are mainly looking for a fun mate. And when the bills come in and the responsibilities of making a home loom over their heads day in and day out, they want out. You know what everyone needs. They need a good daddy; they need a father that has some sense about how to make a family work. Well, who is better to solve that problem than the everlasting Father? No one can do it better than Jesus! I figure by now he knows how to do it right!!!
We need peace!! People have been looking for centuries for a way to have peace with their neighbors, a way to end wars. But the peace treaties haven’t worked. They have been looking for ways to have individual peace – they tried Woodstock, the hippie peace movement, Prozac – they haven’t made a dent. They have tried religion – bigger failure!! They can’t even have peace between democrats and republicans when the country is at war against a common enemy. We need the Prince of Peace, because without him there is no peace sayeth my God unto the wicked.
The world needs a Saviour. They need to rid themselves of the shame and guilt of things they did wrong. They need to forget the past or at least leave the past where it is – in the past. They need the penalties for the wrongs they do to paid off by someone else. They don’t want to go to Hell and they don’t want to be in bondage to something that controls them and makes them do something they don’t want to do anymore. In a word they need Jesus because “Jesus … shall save his people from their sins.”
And when you get Jesus you get all of these. You get lasting peace, you get an outstanding family, you get the mighty God, you get eternally saved from your sins, you get excellent counsel, you get the most amazing person you will ever know in this life and you get him now. You don’t have to wait until after you die. After all, his name is Immanuel, which is “God with us.”
We’ve got what we need in Jesus. Everything the world is looking for is in our Saviour, Jesus Christ. If we can just convince them to take him, they will find out for themselves that He is all they need. Sing “All that thrills my soul is Jesus.”
