Bob
Jones Senior was born to William and Georgia Jones in
Alabama in 1883 and raised in Dothan. He received the
Lord Jesus Christ and was saved as a young boy. He
quickly began preaching and organizing souls as
congregations. Jones even built a "brush arbor" shelter
at thirteen and ministered to fifty four souls. By age
fifteen he was a licensed circuit preacher. The Lord
clearly was using him mightily because of his belief in
the Bible and willingness to preach it.
At
forty years old Bob Jones Senior had preached face to
face without a microphone to an estimated 15 million
people and seen tens of thousands of conversions to the
Lord Jesus Christ.
Shortly
after the Scopes Trial, Jones was burdened with the
worldliness of "higher education" and decided to start a
school which he did. He would also be a pioneer in
Christian radio broadcasting when the technology was
still very young.
The wit
and wisdom of Bob Jones Senior would outlive him. He
regularly preached the chapel services at his university
and would become known for his "chapel sayings." Some
classics are:
·Finish the job.
·It's a sin to do less than your
best.
·The greatest ability is
dependability.
·The test of your character is what
it takes to stop you.
·No doubt, the trouble is with you.
·Beware of the man who kowtows to
his superiors or who is rude to his inferiors.
·Religion says do and live. Jesus
says live and do.
