Correct Thy Son Prov. 13:24 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
This verse is where spare the rod spoil the child comes from.
The source of discipline is from God – Heb 12:5-11 discipline comes from the Lord.
Prov 13:24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes. [in good time, early, don’t wait until you’re really angry] – so, use the rod early in childhood and early in the error – don’t train them to wait for repeated warnings – a little boy at the restaurant was whinny so his dad disciplined him and the boy was fine – his father said, “He just wanted to know that I love him.”
Prov 19:18 Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying – the men in jail rarely had a dad that would discipline them – once they get to the teen years, there is little hope if they have not begun to turn – this verse also shows that the chastening should yield crying – not the whines of a child to make you stop but the whines of a child that has been punished.
Prov 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him – this verse shows you what the problem is – foolishness is in the heart – so discipline is designed to drive foolishness out – you should train them to be obedient to you so that when they are older they will be obedient to the Lord.
Prov 29:15 The rod and reproof give wisdom [associated with fear – fear of Lord]: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame – there are mothers who are experiencing this shame by the 10’s of thousands to day – the reproof accompanies the discipline so that the child understands why and how to avoid it again – so make the reproof brief and to the point.
Prov 23:13-14 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell – you can’t go this far today without repercussions – but this verse shows how far this could go – in the Old Testament a glutton was stoned to death, Deut 21:20-21 – so the harsh beating could keep him from death!
Prov 29:17 Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul – so remember to do what the Bible says if you want rest.
