Paul went everywhere preaching and endured real hardship, suffering, and persecution for what he did.  And here he is summing it up for the Philippians.  Basically, “when you do certain things, I don’t care how much it costs me, even my life, it is worth the trouble.”  It is worth the trouble when:

You don’t murmur (v. 14) – a murmur is a complaint half suppressed or uttered in a low, muttering voice, I Cor 10:10-11, Jud 1:16

You don’t dispute (v. 14) – to dispute is to argue, debate, Acts 6:9, I Tim 6:5

Others can’t justifiably rebuke you (v. 15) – there is no charge against a church in unity – Blameless II Pet 3:14, I Cor 1:8 – Harmless Matt 10:16, Heb 7:26 – be prepared because they will accuse you anyway I Pet 2:12; 3:16

You shine in this crooked world (v. 15) – Rom13:11-14, I Thes 5:5-6

You hold forth the Word of Life (v. 16) – I Pet 1:23, it is alive, these are living words; Matt 4:4, Jn 6:63, it imparts life; Matt 23:35, it lives forever; Jn 1:4, it’s author is life; mess with it and cut it’s life; believe it and it will work, I Thes 2:13

We get to the Judgment Seat of Christ (v. 16) – I Cor 3:11-15, the day is the day of Christ
