Worship John 4:23-24 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
How do you worship God in spirit and truth? True worship of God is expression of your heart and not of your flesh. Most methods of worship in today’s churches reflect the flesh rather than the heart.
What is Worship? Dr. Peter Ruckman:
“Worship is different from prayer and praise; for example, “Lord, save my soul” or “Lord, give me this” can be a prayer. “Thank you, Lord, for saving my soul”, is a praise, or “Thank you, Lord”, for whatever the lord has given you, is a praise. But worship is thanking God for what He is. Worshipping is adoring God as a living person, a living being, an Almighty Creator who is God of gods, King of kings, Lord of lords, the Almighty, the Everlasting, the Alpha and omega, the Beginning and the Ending.”
Meaningful Quotes on Worship
“True worship can only take place when we agree to God sitting, not only on His throne in the center of the universe, but, on the throne that stands in the center of our heart.”
“God is not moved or impressed with our worship until our hearts are moved and impressed by Him.”
Robert E. Webber
“For years, the church has emphasized evangelism, teaching, fellowship, missions, and service to society to the neglect of the very source of its power – worship.”
Back to our passage [Jn.4:23-24]
“First, the SPIRIT of worship is important. We are to render “such homage to God that the entire heart enters into the act.” Whether we are in a time of private praise and adoration, or gathered with the church in corporate proclamation, we are to respond to who God is from the SPIRIT, from the whole of our innermost being.”
“Second, we are to do “this in full harmony with the TRUTH of God as revealed in his word.” The concept of responding to God in SPIRIT can give rise to confusing individual expressions if those expressions are not guided by Scripture. There must be a balance between SPIRIT and TRUTH. One without the other is not complete.” “True worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth” [John 4:23-24]
The popular worship of today is based on flesh and falsehood, not spirit and truth. You can’t bring the music of the world into the church and put some Christian words to it and expect God to receive it as worship.
“…for the Father seeketh such to worship him.” In the presence of God there is constant worship! [Isa.6:1-3] [Rev.4:8-11]
The Simplest Form of Worship: Thomas Jefferson “Worship requires only a man and God.” [Prov.3:5-6] “acknowledge him” from your heart. [Matt.15:8], Today, that’s the norm!
Three Ways to Acknowledge Him by Worship
- Worship acknowledges the Glory Due Him
[Ps.29:1-2] We have a debt which is made of the Glory due His name!
Hymn #489 “Glory to His Name” in your Hymn book testifies to this debt!
[Rev.4:11] Worship is in part why we were created.
Giving Glory to your creator includes Admiration and Honor. You can admire without worshiping, but you can’t worship without admiring. We can honor what we do not worship but we cannot worship the one we do not honor. He is worthy of our Admiration, Honor, and Worship. Giving Him the Glory due Him in our everyday life, “in all thy ways acknowledge him “Is worship.
- Worship acknowledges Our Love for Him
[Ps.40:16] “say continually, The Lord be magnified” Your love for God is shown when you say, “Praise the Lord”. Worship acknowledges our love for our Saviour when we make know aloud our love for God. At that point, your love is not hidden but it is published! [Ps.26:7]
Hymn #332 ‘My Jesus, I love Thee” in you Hymn book is a great way to publish your love for God.
Telling others about your Lord by praising His name is a true form of worship. It is a testimony to the world that He is God! [1 Chron. 16:23-25]
- Worship acknowledges Our Submission to Him
One of the most important reasons to come to church is to demonstrate our submission to God by worshiping Him. This is exactly why many don’t come to church, they are not in submission to Him.
[Ps.95:6] “… bow down: let us kneel…”
[Ps.99:5] “…worship at His footstool…]
[Eph.3:14] “For this cause I bow my knees…]
[Rev.22:8-9] John the apostle bowed before an angel who reproved him because he was not worthy of worship. The angel’s final instruction was to “worship God”
[Rev.14:6-7] the Everlasting Gospel, Worship Him!
