Jesus Christ Our High Priest Heb 7:22-28

Our High Priest Heb. 7 22-28 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO

In the Old Testament the high priest was Aaron or a descendent of Aaron.  There was also a priest named Melchisedek, who was before Aaron and the line of priests who came from Levi.  He foreshadowed the Lord Jesus Christ.  Unlike these priests, Jesus came from the tribe of Judah, he was perfect, he did not need to offer for himself, his one sacrifice finished the work of God and now he is in heaven interceding for us.  Jesus Christ our High Priest is:

The only suitable high priest – “holy” – God is unapproachable by men – he is just – we would be destroyed in his presence as we are – yet because of Jesus Christ we can approach the Father through him because he is ‘one’ with the Father [1 Jn 5:7; Jn 10:30] – he is all the fullness of the Godhead bodily – to call an earthly priest “Father” or to call a pope “Holy Father” is blasphemous – Jesus is the only holy priest.

The only substitutionary high priest – “such a high priest became us… harmless” – we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all – he didn’t kill a lamb, he offered himself [Acts 20:28] – he is our ‘daysman’ [Job 9:33] – he is our ‘mediator’ [1 Tim 2:4-6] – he represents us to God so that we can come boldly to the throne of grace [Heb 4:16] – while he was on earth he never hurt anybody and he’s not going to hurt you now if you will come to him by faith – you can and should trust him more than anybody.

The only sinless high priest – “undefiled” – he was born of a woman but he was not “in Adam” since God is his Father – therefore, he is sinless – Mary, on the other hand, was not sinless – her offering in Lk 2:24 was a sin offering for herself [Lev 12] – we are all sinners dead in trespasses and sins and so all in Adam are knocked out without a Saviour [no such thing as purgatory] – Jesus was sinless and remains sinless even though he was tempted in all points like as we are and though he died with our sins in his body [2 Cor 5:21] – his blood cleanseth us from ALL sin [1 Jn 1:7].

The only supernatural high priest – “separate from sinners” – our adversary the devil is a supernatural being – he is the accuser of the brethren – the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God – so we must have a supernatural high priest – he sees and knows beforehand the things we need – he is praying for us already – and he knows us better than anyone – I don’t need a man like myself – I need a man who can back up the words of God because he is the Word of God.

The only supreme high priest – “higher than the heavens” – he is already in glory – we don’t need the ‘higher power’ of A.A.  – we don’t need Buddha, Mohammed, the ‘Jehovah’ of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, the Mormon god, etc. – they are either dead or man-made perversions of our true God – Jesus Christ, ‘ever liveth” – he is victorious over all principalities – he doesn’t return each year to offer sacrifices like the earthly high priests – when he died on the cross he said, “It is finished.”

Conclusion: And indeed “it is finished” – if you have never trusted Jesus to be your Savior, trust him today and you, too, will have the only high priest you will ever need in the universe – likewise, if you know someone who isn’t saved, you should be encouraged to tell him that Jesus Christ our High Priest is all he needs.
