Often you will find metaphors used in the Bible.  For instance, we are likened to sheep.  Jesus is likened to a shepherd.  In Jn 10:7-9 Jesus is the door.  Interestingly, we can look through the Bible and find references to doors and by reading their contexts we can glean some wonderful things about the Lord Jesus.

With Jesus as the door, we have:

Salvation – Jn 10:9 – Jesus said, “by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved” – you get to heaven through the “door” [see Rev 4:1] – one fellow said, “my church has the keys to the kingdom” – his friend replied, “what do I need with keys, I have the door” – Jesus is the way of salvation – you don’t get in by any other means – if you try that you will fail; you are a thief – church membership, baptism, good works, etc. are not the way in.

Access – Eph 2:18 – Jesus has given us access to the Father – “no man cometh unto the Father but by me” – as people have often said, “It’s not what you know; it’s who you know” – when we pray in Jesus’ name, we have an entrance right into the throne room [Heb 4:16].

Ingress – Jn 10:9 – Jesus said, “shall go in and out, and find pasture” – we go in and out through the door – entering “in” through the door puts us in the body of Christ – like the Bible says, we are “in Christ” – as a consequence we are in the church, the Lord’s body [1 Cor 12:13-27; Eph 4:14-16] – by being in his body you grow when you get into a good local church.

Egress – Jn 10:9 – Jesus said, “shall go in and out, and find pasture” – likewise, we “go out” into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature – we are not to keep all of this to ourselves – we are to go out and tell others.

Security – Gen 6:16; 7:16 – there was a door in the ark and when everyone was on board, the Lord shut them in – they rode out the storm and didn’t come out of the ark until the ground was dry – the shut door pictures our eternal security in Jesus.

Opportunity – Rev 3:7-8 – we refer to the “door of opportunity” – when the Lord opens the door, he intends for you to go through it [to be saved] – when that door shuts no one can open it – for sure, death shuts the door of opportunity – there is no such thing as purgatory – the thief on the cross just had hours of life left to go through the door – but there may even be a time when God just finishes dealing with a soul and leaves him alone before he dies – it’s like the door of opportunity closes [Prov 1:24-33; Jer 7:16] – don’t wait – if you have not received Jesus then trust him today [2 Cor 6:2].

Conclusion: It’s not going to do you any good to be left outside the door when it closes.  You must enter and Jesus is the way.  Trust him today.  It’s not going to do the rest of the world any good for you to stay inside the door.  Let them know who the door is and that it is open for them to come in.
